Orange Lips: Spring/Summer Trend 2014

One of the big Spring/Summer beauty trends for 2014 is orange lips. I've long been a fan of a bright statement lipstick, and here are a few of my favourite zesty shades...

When it comes to orange lipstick you would be surprised at how wearable this trend can be. It was spotted on the runway at DKNY, DSquared, and Rag and Bone to name a few. There are a wide array of tones, some on the more red side, progressing to more yellow/corals. As a general rule, if you have paler skin, go for softer orange shades and peaches, if you are darker, you can get away with richer, more burnt oranges. I think the best way is to swatch lots and see what you are comfortable with as some vibrant shades can be really stunning on paler skintones.

If you are a bit scared of a bright matte lipstick then you can always opt for a more sheer textured balm or gloss which can be more wearable if you are wary of such a punchy shade.

Here are come of my favourites beginning with l-r: Revlon's Lip Butter in Tutti Frutti, a sheer textured balm, MAC's Morange, a matte, true orange lipstick, and, Tom Ford's True Coral, for those who would still feel more comfortable with a reddish coral rather than out and out orange, (Tom Ford's Wild Ginger is also amazing)

I would advise keeping the rest of your make up simple with this look as it's all about the lips. So I would stick with a natural base like a CC or BB cream if you can get away with it, mascara, and a peachy/coral toned blusher. If you want to ramp it up for night time, you could add a chocolate smokey brown liner to the eyes for more definition, but only a small amount as not to detract from the main feature, which are the lips.

If going for a lipstick then be sure to match your liner to the colour and keep the outline soft to avoid looking to dated or "done". I like Entertain Me lip pencil, from MAC shown above.

If a bold lipstick is too much and you want something more subtle for daytime then a gloss is a great choice. Revlon's Super Lustrous gloss in Kiss Me Coral is a lovely sheer shade. Pictured below. Another option would be a lip crayon, Stila,  and Bourjois have some great ones, as well as Clinique.

Here is a swatch of all the colours mentioned: L-R: Revlon's Tutti Frutti Lip Butter, Morange by MAC, True Coral by Tom Ford, and Kiss Me Coral gloss by Revlon.

Will you embrace the orange lip trend this Spring/Summer?
